The symposium, themed "Neural and Immune Codes in Cancer" will gather an interdisciplinary community of researchers to discuss the interplay between the neural and immune systems in relation to cancer initiation, progression, defense and therapy. This symposium will emphasise the dynamic interactions among tumour cells, neurons and immune components, and how these relationships impact tumour growth, metastasis and the tumour microenvironment.

Desde os anos 90, a estimulação cerebral não invasiva evoluiu de uma ideia experimental para uma ferramenta estabelecida no tratamento da depressão e no avanço da investigação em neurociência. Entre estas tecnologias, a estimulação magnética transcraniana repetitiva (rTMS) está clinicamente validada e é utilizada no tratamento da perturbação depressiva major, também conhecida como depressão unipolar.

Pensar no passado e em como este molda o presente nunca é simples. Mas para revisitar o “Antes e o Depois” da Fundação Champalimaud (FC), Zach Mainen, que faz parte da FC desde o primeiro dia, foi uma escolha natural. Falámos sobre o que significou embarcar num projeto novo e imprevisível, e sobre como o sonho de um pequeno grupo se tornou, gradualmente, realidade. Espero que esta história inspire quem a ler a aventurar-se no desconhecido e a confiar que, mesmo quando o futuro parece incerto, este pode transformar-se em algo notável.

Maria João Villas-Boas começou a seguir os passos da Fundação Champalimaud (FC) desde os seus primórdios. “Fiquei fascinada, muito fascinada” disse-me, quando lhe perguntei quando tinha sido a primeira vez que tinha ouvido falar da mesma. Seguia o trabalho de Leonor Beleza de perto através de artigos em jornais e a visão tão clara que tinha para a FC impressionou-a.
