O stress oxidativo é uma consequência directa do excesso no corpo dos chamados radicais livres — moléculas reactivas e instáveis que contêm oxigénio. Os radicais livres são subprodutos metabólicos normais e também ajudam a transmitir sinais no corpo. Quanto ao stress oxidativo, pode ser causado por factores de estilo de vida, ambientais e biológicos, como tabagismo, alto consumo de álcool, má alimentação, stress, poluição, radiação, químicos industriais e inflamação crónica.

The symposium, themed "Neural and Immune Codes in Cancer" will gather an interdisciplinary community of researchers to discuss the interplay between the neural and immune systems in relation to cancer initiation, progression, defense and therapy.
