Pathology Updates Course 2026

The Champalimaud Foundation is excited to announce the upcoming course, Pathology Updates 2026, which will be held on September 21st-23rd in the Seminar Room. This course is organised in partnership with Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and Rochester. The 2026 edition marks its 6th iteration and the 3rd to be hosted at the Champalimaud Foundation.

About the Course

This comprehensive course - designed to address both common and uncommon diagnostic dilemmas encountered in surgical pathology practice - offers an in-depth exploration of various pathologic findings through detailed case discussions.

Participants will gain valuable insights into the differential diagnoses across multiple specialised areas, including:

- Gastrointestinal, Hepatic & Pancreatobiliary Pathology;
- Pulmonary and Thoracic Pathology;
- Cytopathology;
- GYN Pathology.

Course Objectives

- Identify and resolve diagnostic dilemmas: develop the skills to tackle both common and uncommon challenges in surgical pathology;
- Interpret ancillary tests: learn to apply appropriate ancillary tests for study cases to enhance diagnostic accuracy;
- Integrate diagnostic, clinical, and pathologic insights: improve communication and collaboration between pathologists and clinicians by understanding the complexities of diagnostic, clinical, and pathologic challenges.

Organisation

Dr. Rafaela de Lima Rego is a Consultant in Anatomic Pathology at the Pathology Centre of Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown and Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre, since July 2023. She is a practicing surgical pathologist with over 20 years of experience in three different countries (Brazil, USA and Portugal). She served as faculty at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa, Francisco Gentil for 15 years and at Hospital da Luz de Lisboa for 9 years. She did her Medical Degree and Residency Program in Rio de Janeiro and her Fellowship in Gastrointestinal and Hepato-pancreaticobiliary pathology (GI-HPB) at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. As part of her activities, she performs diagnostic pathology in a complex GI-HPB consultation routine, participates in multidisciplinary consultations and therapeutic decision-making tumor boards in Gastro-Entero-Pancreatic and Liver tumors, has been a training advisor for residents at the Anatomic Pathology Residency Program, Director of many gastrointestinal and liver courses, author and co-author of several papers published in national and international scientific journals, author of 2 book chapters and participates in translational research projects, with special interests in GI-HPB pathology. While at the Mayo Clinic, she met Dr. Alessandra Schmitt and from this friendship came the enthusiasm to create the Pathology Updates course.
