Towards nanoscale live-cell biology through AI-enhanced super-resolution microscopy

Abstract

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy allows biological observation below the diffraction limit of light. Live-cell applications remain limited by phototoxicity, temporal resolution, and sample stability.

In this talk, I will discuss recent open-source computational and machine learning approaches developed in our lab (including ZeroCostDL4Mic, DL4MicEverywhere, and eSRRF) that push the limits of live-cell imaging. I will show how combining AI analytics with adaptive optical microscopy enables long-term nanoscale observation of dynamic cellular processes and host-pathogen interactions.


Bio

Ricardo Henriques is a Principal Investigator at ITQB NOVA (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) and Honorary Professor at University College London (UCL). He moved his laboratory from UCL and the Francis Crick Institute to Portugal in 2020, and was elected an EMBO Member in 2024. Trained in physics and engineering, his laboratory focuses on the intersection of live-cell super-resolution microscopy, open-source AI technologies, and quantitative bioimaging.
