Abstract

The Shanmugam lab is studying how cancer cells alter their metabolism to evade programmed cell death, promote immune evasion and foster cooperative metabolic heterogeneity in invasion and metastasis. She has a second area of focus investigating how beta adrenergic signaling can be targeted to improve myeloma outcomes. Her long-term objective is to investigate niche elements to identify targetable vulnerabilities and to develop metabolism-informed precision therapeutic strategies.

Bio

Malathy (Mala) Shanmugam, PhD, MS, is an associate professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory School of Medicine. Dr. Shanmugam is a member of the Cell and Molecular Biology Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute, and the Molecular and Systems Pharmacology Program at Emory Laney Graduate School's Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.
