Champalimaud Foundation Ranks 11th Worldwide and 5th in Europe in Global Neuroscience Research Among Non-Profit Institutions

For the past decade, the Nature Index has ranked leading research institutions worldwide based on their scientific output in prestigious journals. This month, Nature Index announced the Champalimaud Foundation as the 11th top non-profit institution in neuroscience research worldwide, and 5th in Europe, highlighting the CF’s growing impact on the global stage.

Champalimaud Foundation Ranks 11th in Global Neuroscience Research Among Non-Profit Institutions

Joining institutions such as the Max Planck Society, Germany (#1), the Allen Institute, USA (#6), and the Pasteur Institute, France (#13), the CF's ranking places it among the world’s top contributors to neuroscience, and as the only Portuguese institution to make the list. The ranking is based on its contribution to published research, which is measured by both the number of articles (“Count”) and the portion of authorship (“Share”).

“This recognition reflects our commitment to fostering an environment that allows scientists the independence and flexibility to reach their full creative potential”, said Joe Paton, Director of the Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme at CF. “We fiercely believe in promoting freedom and diversity of thought, and our goal is not only to advance scientific knowledge but also to improve how science is done, enabling collective achievements beyond what any individual scientist or lab could achieve”.

By encouraging scientists to work together, CF’s institutional culture fosters a hub of productive scientific exchange and innovation, contributing significantly to the international neuroscience landscape. CF’s Board of Directors added, “This ranking not only underlines our success in producing high-quality research but also underscores the critical role that neuroscience plays in our institution's mission. We are proud to see our scientists' contributions recognised at such a prestigious level and reaffirm our commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery”.

The Nature Index ranking took into account several factors, including the number of articles published, the contribution each institution made to those articles, and data collected from 128 high-quality journals, selected by an independent group of active researchers and validated by a subsequent survey of global researchers. The index further cements CF’s rising prominence in neuroscience research.
