Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and it brings with it significant emotional, social, economic, and public health challenges.
Prevention is a crucial tool in the fight against cancer. By identifying risks early, it not only saves lives and reduces suffering but also helps conserve valuable healthcare resources, both human and financial.
To address this, the Champalimaud Foundation has developed a personalised Cancer Risk Assessment and Management Programme. This programme assesses and manages each individual’s cancer risk, providing a comprehensive, integrated approach that supports people throughout their lives.
The programme combines multidisciplinary follow-up with a deep understanding of each person’s medical history and lifestyle habits. This allows for personalised action plans, timely diagnoses, and access to innovative treatments in a cutting-edge clinical environment.
A key part of this programme is Skin Screening, which uses the latest technology to detect skin lesions and identify risks for skin cancer. Early intervention is crucial, and this service plays a vital role in oncological risk prevention.
The new Skin Screening Oncological Risk Prevention Centre Generali Tranquilidade | Champalimaud is equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to detect and monitor skin abnormalities. This contributes to the broader cancer risk management strategy within the Champalimaud Foundation’s personalised programme.
The equipment was donated by Generali Tranquilidade, highlighting their commitment to cancer prevention as part of their corporate responsibility.
On the morning of December 4th, a public event was held at the Champalimaud Foundation’s auditorium to launch the new centre and its role in cancer prevention. Opened by Leonor Beleza, President of the Champalimaud Foundation, the programme featured a panel discussion with key figures, including João Silveira Botelho, Vice-President of the Champalimaud Foundation, Cristina Vaz Tomé, Secretary of State for Health Management, and Pedro Carvalho, CEO of Generali Tranquilidade. The debate focused on the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, philanthropy, and integrating innovative solutions into cancer care. In addition, Dr. Daniela Cunha, Director of the Dermatology Unit at the Champalimaud Foundation, gave a talk on "Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Skin Cancer." The event concluded with final remarks by Pedro Reis, Minister of Economy.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the Skin Screening - Oncological Risk Prevention Centre, where attendees had the chance to learn more about the advanced services offered.
