Champalimaud Foundation’s Gynaecology Unit Triples Annual Volume of Robotic Surgeries

Since the introduction of robotic surgery in 2017, the Multidisciplinary Gynaecology Unit at the Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC) has experienced a marked and sustained increase in the use of this technology for the treatment of gynaecological cancers.

700 robotic surgery

Between February 2017 and December 2020, the team performed approximately 200 robotic procedures. Over the subsequent five years, from December 2020 to December 2025, this number more than doubled, reaching 500 procedures, an achievement that reflects the consolidation of a nationally recognised reference programme with extensive experience in robotic gynaecological surgery.

This growth underscores the progressive integration of robotic surgery as a standard  approach in the treatment of several gynaecological cancers, including uterine cancers (notably endometrial cancer), early-stage ovarian cancer, and selected cases of cervical cancer.

Robotic surgery allows for greater precision and less invasive interventions, typically involving smaller incisions, reduced postoperative pain and faster recovery, meaning that an increasing number of women are able to benefit from improved clinical outcomes and a better overall treatment experience.

As the unit’s expertise has expanded, robotic surgery has become both more efficient and applicable to a broader range of clinical cases, in line with international quality guidelines that prioritise minimally invasive techniques whenever clinically appropriate.

The sustained increase in the number of procedures reflects the ongoing commitment of the CCC Gynaecology Unit team, continued investment in technological innovation, and a shared dedication to enhancing the quality of care, expanding access to advanced surgical techniques and delivering excellence in gynaecological oncology treatment.
