António Jacinto is Director of the Centre for the Study of Chronic Diseases (CEDOC) at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and Associate Professor at the same faculty in the field of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. His research group studies the regeneration of organs and tissues, has published articles in high-impact magazines and obtained highly competitive international funding in this scientific area. António Jacinto has a degree in Biochemistry (1993) from the University of Lisbon and received his PhD from the University of London in the area of Genetics and Developmental Biology (1999) under the Gulbenkian Medicine and Biology Doctoral Programme.
After a postdoctoral period at University College London, he started his independent research group at the Gulbenkian Science Institute, Oeiras, in 2002. In 2004, he moved to the Molecular Medicine Institute (Instituto de Medicina Molecular) in Lisbon, where he developed several research projects and was involved in coordination activities of the Doctoral Programme and the Cell Biology and Development Programme until 2011.
António Jacinto has an active participation in the scientific community, regularly evaluating research projects and reviewing scientific articles in international journals. He is also a member of the Scientific Council of Health and Life Sciences at the Foundation for Science and Technology (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and President of the Portuguese Society for Developmental Biology (Sociedade Portuguesa de Biologia de Desenvolvimento).
