Maria João Cardoso has been appointed as Head Breast Surgeon at the Breast Unit of the Champalimaud Foundation in 2011. Her undergraduate and post graduate studies were undertaken at the Porto Faculty of Medicine, Porto University in Portugal. She dedicated her carrier to breast surgery and started her training in oncoplastic surgery at the Institut Gustave Roussy in France in 1994 with Jean-Yves Petit and Lise Barreu. From 2007 to 2010 she was Clinical Director of the S. João Hospital Breast Unit in Porto. She holds a PhD in Medicine from the Porto University with the topic of objective evaluation of aesthetic results in breast cancer conservative treatment. From 2006 to 2011 she was appointed Assistant Professor of the Department of Surgery of the Porto Faculty of Medicine. Since 2006 the majority of her research activity is related to the development of objective ways of evaluating aesthetic results in all forms of breast surgery, aiming at a better quality of life for patients. She is the medical coordinator of the Breast Research group at INESC Porto. She is the PI of the EU Horizon 2022 funded CINDERELLA Project, Until 2022, she has published more than 90 papers on international journals, with an h index of 36 and (i10 -60) . Until 2022, she has also co-authored more than 200 full communications in major national and international conferences. She is a member of the editorial board of The Breast and of The International Journal of Breast Cancer and reviewer of several topic international journals. One of her main interests is also quality of life of breast cancer patients and in 2011 she founded and is to this date president of a Support Centre for Breast Cancer Patients, Mama Help (www.mamahelp.pt), cooperating actively in European advocacy training like EUROPA DONNA (the European Breast Cancer Coalition) and THINK PINK EUROPE. She is a member of the board of the Portuguese Society of Senology.of the EUSOMA Executive Committee (European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists) and of the Faculty of ESO (European Society of Oncology) and ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology).
Areas of interest: Cosmetic results of breast surgery, prediction of cosmetic results, oncoplastic surgery, new approaches in axillary surgery, hereditary breast cancer.
