Around 600 million people around the world play chess, with 70% of adults having played at some point in their lives; and as 20th July is International Chess Day, we spoke to Champalimaud Researchers Carlos Stein Brito and T. Quendera to find out more about why they play and what the game means to them as scientists.

Zoom-In on Champalimaud - 3rd Edition - Issue 4

Since 1999, 11th May has been in the medical calendar as European Melanoma Day (or simply ‘Euromelanoma’). Originating in Belgium, 24 countries now participate in this campaign, which highlights the importance of preventative action, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment in the battle against skin cancer.

Zoom-In on Champalimaud - 3rd Edition - Issue 3

29th April is the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, creator of modern ballet, and to commemorate this, since 1982 it has also been International Dance Day. This day is dedicated to celebrating dance, revelling in the universality of this art form (across all political, cultural and ethnic barriers), and bringing people together within a common ‘language’.

2023 European Researchers' Night

The second edition of the European Researchers’ Night (ERN), organised by the RAISE - Researchers in Action for Inclusion in Science and Education consortium will be held on the 29th of September 2023 and will, once again, take place at the Champalimaud Foundation (Lisbon).

The main goal of this public event, organised by consortium partners, Native Scientists, Champalimaud Foundation and Instituto de Medicina Molecular, is to promote, actively and effectively, diversity and inclusion in science and education.

AI and Machine Learning in Cancer Imaging 3.0

On behalf of the International Cancer Imaging Society (ICIS) and the Champalimaud Foundation, we would like to invite you to register for our jointly hosted meeting 'AI and Machine Learning in Cancer Imaging 3.0', which will be held on 30 June and 1 July 2023.  The meeting will take place at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, in Lisbon.

Colorectal cancer is rising in people under 50 – and nobody knows why

The past 10 years have witnessed a doubling of colorectal cancers (CRC) in people under 50 years of age – from 5% to 10% of all cases. Just in the US, between 2008 and 2015, this increase was over 60%!
