‘Metamersion: Latent Spaces’ joins art, science and technology at the Champalimaud Warehouse

The second edition of Metamersion, the cycle of artistic, scientific, technological and therapeutic immersive events of the Champalimaud Foundation, launches on December 15th with the programme Latent Spaces, taking place at the Champalimaud Warehouse, in the former warehouses of DocaPesca, in Lisbon, in a location that is also in a latent phase, and where the first steps towards the creation of a centre dedicated to Human Neuroecology and Digital Therapeutics are being taken.

To mark this date, we asked Marcelo Mendonça, neurologist and researcher from the Neuropsychiatry Unit and Neural Circuits Dysfunction Lab at the Champalimaud Foundation to provide an overview of Movement Disorders, their symptoms, diagnosis and treatments.

Portuguese consortium to receive 78 million euros funding from the Programa de Recuperação e Resiliência to develop “responsible” AI

For every argument that construes AI as essential, promising and transforming across nearly all industries, there are voiced concerns about this technology. Many people do not trust AI, claiming that intelligent machines will one day dominate humankind. But while this is a remote possibility, the harm that can be done to people (albeit mostly unintentionally) by deep learning algorithms is very tangible – and has already been known to occur in the real world.

Work from Champalimaud Foundation Researcher Acknowledged by the Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology

After receiving her bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and a master's degree in Health Sciences from the University of Minho, which introduced her to the field of immunology, Cardoso embarked upon a PhD in the laboratory of Henrique Veiga-Fernandes at the Champalimaud Foundation to study the role of neuro-immune interactions in metabolism.

The multiple dimensions of the first European Researchers' Night at the Champalimaud Foundation

This public event, organised by the RAISE (Researchers in Action for Inclusion in Science and Education) consortium composed of the NGO Native Scientist, the Champalimaud Foundation and the Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), joined the 49 ERNs that took place in 25 European countries on the same date.

Female flies enter the ring of sexual competition

When it comes to sexual competition, males have the star role. Clashing bodies, locking horns, biting and kicking are all considered fair play. Since these behaviours are so salient and robust, most studies focus on male behaviour, leaving females aside. 
 

2022 European Researchers’ Night

Two editions of the European Researchers’ Night will be held at the incredible premises of the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown located in Lisbon.

To reach members of the public from underserved and underprivileged communities, the European Researchers’ Night will be supported by several pre-events and co-created by researchers and members of the public, namely students from the school programmes and artists.
